I guess I need to learn what the "Detail" and "Contrast" sliders in the noise reduction section do. Seems I have more to learn that guy didn't even use the "Mask" control.

In this new version I have certainly smoothed away some detail in some areas (though it can be hard, looking at the original, to decide what is real detail, and what is noise), but in some areas, it looks sharper and more detailed than in the 2007 version. The results were a little too smoothed-out and "plasticy," so I ended up backing off both the luminance NR and Mask to 30, for the results seen here. Then I sharpened for detail in the bird, and fiddled with "Detail" and "Mask" (important, this allows you to exempt less-detailed areas from the sharpening, so that the effects of noise reduction are not undermined by sharpening), ending up with Mask at 40. First I turned off sharpening and adjusted the luminance NR to clean up the background, initially setting it to 40.
Here's what I was able to do in short order in LR3b2. I've never bothered to learn Noise Ninja, Neat Image, etc., and have pretty much only used the tools available in Adobe Camera Raw.
